THE FISHING

ARCTIC LODGES on Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada offers anglers the ultimate fishing experience for trophy Pike, Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling and Walleye.

Whether you prefer spin-cast fishing or fly fishing, Arctic Lodges welcomes you. Our knowledgeable guides and first class equipment will have you comfortably enjoying trophy fish all day long, regardless of the type of fishing, or the species you are after.

"Hunt" for giant northerns in the spring while slowly boating through calm bays with the clearest water you have ever seen. In early spring the Pike are sunning themselves in the shallow water. By the end of June they have moved into the weedy bays before going slightly deeper in early July. Once the waters cool again in late summer the Pike are again feeding aggressively prior to the winter freeze up. A master angler sized fish of 40" plus is very attainable, with the unwritten rule of the lodge being a 45" for "master angler" status...with some of our guests catching fish over 50 inches.

Trophy Lake Trout are also very shallow after ice-out, and feeding very aggressively prior to moving deeper in mid-summer. Come late August and they are again found in the shallows and feeding aggressively. Those who are after the big "Lakers" often prefer this time of year. In 2009, a guest of our lodge caught and released a world-record sized fish of 73.4 lbs. Average size caught is between 5 - 20 lbs.

Arctic Grayling are caught just as easily with spinning tackle as they are on flies...you must visit Arctic Lodges to learn our secret for these acrobatic beauties. The Grayling often range from 1 - 4 lbs.

Walleye are best caught in many of Reindeer Lake's 94 tributaries and on our back lakes where your guide can take you into. These lakes are calm, peaceful and a wonderful place to view wildlife. Average Walleye on these lakes is between 4 - 9 lbs.

Arctic Lodges maintains a catch and release policy, ensuring the sustainability of this world-class fishery for our future generations.

EQUIPMENT AND TACKLE

NORTHERN PIKE - A 6 1/2 to 7' medium/heavy action rod, spooled with 14 - 20 lb. line. We recommend Titanium leaders atleast 12" long. As far as tackle, Len Thompson spoons(all sizes) in red/white, 5 of diamonds, fire tiger, etc. Also popular are the Daredevil spoons, Johnson Silver Minnow tipped with rubber minnow, various spinner baits, buzz baits and crank baits, etc. Your guide and our friendly staff in the lodge tackle shop can assist you in getting any tackle you may need, in addition to what you may bring. FOR THE FLY FISHERMAN - a 9', 8 - 10 weight rod with good quality reel and up to 100 yards of backing. In regards to flies, anything ranging in 4 - 8 inches in length with a hook size of 1/0 - 3/0. Poppers are very popular especially in the early and late season. Mid season when Pike are deeper you will require weighted flies. Favorite colors vary from red, white, yellow, black to a combination of all, with flash recommended.

LAKE TROUT- Same rod set-up as for Pike, with the "lodge lure of choice" being the large Gibbs Red Eye line-up and the Daredevil Ruby Eyes. Popular colors are silver and blue, 5 of diamonds, fire tiger. Trolling with the use of Dipsy Divers is common practice.FOR THE FLY FISHERMAN - basically the same set up as for the Pike with a sink tip line though.

ARCTIC GRAYLING - A 6' light/medium action rod spooled with 6 - 8 lb. line. Small Mepp's spinners are recommended, of which, we have an abundant supply of at our tackle shop. FOR THE FLY FISHERMAN - a 4 - 6 weight rod. The diet of the Arctic Grayling is predominantly insect, which make them quick to take a dry fly. Recommended hook size of 14 is the norm. Elk Hair Caddis is definitely one of the most popular. With that being said, matching the hatch is often tricky with these fish, which is why the fly fisherman loves to pursue them!

WALLEYE - Same rod set up as for the Grayling, . Lures of choice are various and assorted jig head, jigging spoons. FOR THE FLY FISHERMAN - a 5 - 7 weight rod. Flies that should be brought on your trip include the Clouser minnow patterns and streamers. Also, leech patterns up to 4 inches in length are often successful.
